Which ECU to pick?

Hey guys/gals,

So if you're starting with a blank slate... no manufacturer preference... GM, Ford, MegaSquirt, whoever... don't care. Who has the computer you're going to choose to build a EFI system from scratch? Who has the most cost effective, easiest to work with... Stand alone ECU, easy to get, easy to program & tune... etc.?

I'm doing research and want to hear from those that play in this area. I have a couple of projects in mind and would like to start with a robust ECU that's not going to require me to jump through excessive hoops.

Thoughts?
