Going online with data acquisition takes forever

I made a custom ADX for a custom ECU, and it all works but when I click the go-online button it takes maybe 20 seconds to connect before it starts displaying data. What can cause this?
I have no command configured as a connect command, only a macro that is set as the monitor command and that seems to repeat as it should when the communications have started.

Some ECM need a 10k resister to start communications?

well this one doesn't. It just needs a command sent down the pipe to start sending back data.
