Hardware connection issue

Post by moellers »

I need a little help with my hardware connection. I have a 1995 Olds Aurora 4.0. It uses the 16 pin ALDL connection with OBD1 and 8192 baud with a 16197429 ECM (Northstar style). I bought a USB interface cable from www.aldlcable.com. The interface works as I have connected to the Com5 connection while connected to the vehicle and am receiving data through the cable. When I run TunerPro RT and go to the preferences option, I select the Com5 port and have pressed the 'Test for Valid Cable' and it fails. I have played around with the interface type with no luck. Is this cable incompatible with the program? Since the serial data is there, can't Tunerpro simply read it without any specific knowledge of the interface? I am having problems finding any other program that has the capability of reading this unique ALDL.

the 'test for valid cable' will fail if it is connected to the ALDL port when you press the button.

i have the same cable, and can guarantee it does work with tunerpro.

is the test the only problem, or does the PCM refuse to connect to the laptop?

I do not receive any data into the program from the PCM whatsoever. I have a constant 'Hardware not found' and a 'ALDL: Not Connected' message at the bottom. My ALDL/Emulation settings are Max232/2, Com5 (Which is what the device mgr shows for the FTDI hardware) and everything else is default. I tried the Carbytes 2.0 program and it receives data into the program but it is all junk since I don't have a definition file for this setup. Any ideas or other setup things I need to check? Thanks for your reply.

Just like with CarBytes, TunerPro needs the proper definition file in order to communicate with the vehicle.

Is there a definition file available for this vehicle? I tried the Northstar.ads, since this vehicles ECM is based on the 94-95 Cadillac computer. Any other suggestions on what I might try?
