Need a plug-in?

I'm trying to get a new setup working - new laptop - new os (win7-32) - new TP5 install. The target is a 1227749 controlling a Porsche V8 with a Vortech supercharger running $59, Ostrich, Max232 ALDL interface with serial to USB converter.

I can emulate, start the car and run. I can't data log or get the dash to work. The serial-USB driver seems to be installed correctly on Com5, when I test the interface from the DA Plug-In configuration dialog it says it found the cable and all's good. When I try to connect I see a 'connecting' message at the bottom of the screen that never goes away. Do I need a plug-in for serial data acquisition over ALDL?
