Trouble getting TunerPro RT to open/run
I am having problems getting the TunerPro RT software to run. I hope this post is not excessively lengthy, but I wanted to include as much detail as possible to narrow the possible causes.
For quite some time I had been successfully using TunerPro RT v.4.0, AutoProm v2.5A(USB), and USB driver FTDI 1.0.2147.0 on my faithful 4 year old workhorse Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop(P4 2.4GHz, 256SDRAM, 30 GB HD, Windows XP SP1). Unfortunately it is on it's last legs(intermittent motherboard error). So now I am setting up my backup Dell Inspiron 600M Laptop(Pentium M 1.80GHz, 1.00 GB RAM, 60 GB HD, Windows XP SP2) as my main work computer. Unfortunately the TunerPro RT software doesn't seem to like the computer(or visa versa).
I had loaded TunerPro RT v.3.09 quite sometime ago and seem to recall having AutoProm communication issues that I did not bother to resolve(I just used my other laptop). I then installed TunerPro RT v.4.00 and could not get it to run. It will hang on the small opening graphic(TunerPro RT - Version 4.00 - Detecting Hardware). It doesn't lockup the computer. I can open and/or continue to use other programs(although the TunerPro graphic wouldn't refresh - the area where the graphic was is left white). It is not just "thinking", I have left the graphic up for 20+ minutes, it just will not go past this point.
If I try to reopen TunerPro RT I get a message [ TunerPro initialization error TunerPro is already running ]. If I open Windows Task Manager(ctrl/alt/del) it does not show up as a running application. It does however show up under running processes, and shows up twice if I have reopened TunerPro RT and haven't closed the error message. Ending the process(TunerPro.exe) will clear the graphic but of course I still don't have a working application.
I have tried uninstalling TunerPro RT and reinstalling it, same symptoms. I tried downloading the newest version(v.4.14) and installing that, same symptoms(except the graphic showed v.4.14). I have tried opening TunerPro RT with the AutoProm connected/ disconnected/ configured to COM 3/ configured to COM 4/ upgrading the driver to FTDI 1.0.2154.0/ (can't do anything with the AutoProm firmware without any communication - but keep in mind that with my old laptop I had no problems using AutoProm and TunerPro RT v. 4.0 so I don't suspect a problem there).
I recently downloaded a new FTDI driver from their web site but haven't tried that yet(not too eager to explore solutions I'm not 100% sure of, plus it seems to me the program should open even if there is NO USB driver installed).
The only version of TunerPro RT I can get to open is version 3.09 and it fails to detect the AutoProm hardware with any combination of settings/drivers. Does this suggest I have two issues to resolve; 1) getting TunerPro to open, and 2) a communications issue ??? Or are they related ????
I had hoped this was a somewhat common issue so I tried searching the TunerPro user forum and came up empty. This of course is speaks well of the software that a number of users haven't had this problem, but bad for me in that it may mean I have an isolated case.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions ? Has anyone run into the same issues ? I will be indebted to anyone that can help me find a solution. Thanks !

I have not heard of this issue previous to now.
Before I go on, I'd be interested in getting the older copies of TP RT, if you don't mind, I just like to see how things like this have progressed over the versions sometimes.
You are correct that TP RT should open without a USB driver installed, or even a device connected for that matter. So I would leave the hardware out of the equasion until you can get TP RT to open on it's own, thne add in the hardware. You can even connect the hardware after TP RT is open and "initialize hardware" with it's own tool bar button.
TP RT should definatly show up under applications in the task manager, I just verified that a second ago.
When you download the program do you first save to your HDD or do you use the "run" option, both should work, but I prefer to "save" and then install the program from the directory where it saved.
I am currently running XP SP2 and have no issues opening TP RT, so as long as you don't have a corrupt install that should not be a factor.
Mark will have to chime in and give you more ideas.
BTW If you want to sell your failing lappy let me know, I may be interested, depending on a few factors.

TunerPro RT will show up under running applications in task manager once it is actually fully loaded and running(v.3.09). I believe it showing up under processes when it fails to open possibly indicates where the issue occurs as the program loads.

I have both: 1) downloaded/saved to disk the program(s) (SetupTunerProRT_v414.exe, etc.) and
2) copied over from my other laptop
a) all TunerPro files/folders and
b) install programs (SetupTunerProRT_v414.exe, etc.) - same results.

Good to know.

I'm still making use of my old laptop, I just can't rely on it. I sometimes have to "spank it" to get it to boot. Not real reassuring when you are burning chips/flashing PCMs. I'm sure one of these days the "spank" won't wake it up and I don't want this happen in the middle of reprogramming.

>I am running XP SP2 without any problems so I'm wondering if you have another program running that's causing a conflict. Have you tried shutting down all non essential applications/processes before launching TunerPro?
Thanks for the reply. It gave me some more homework to do.
On a fresh boot-up there are 68 processes running. I close all but 16 (essential?) processes, most of which are running on my other laptop. I don't open any other programs and none show up in Windows Task Manager. I make sure Task Manager is closed (I've seen conflicts with some programs when open). I try to open TunerPro RT and wait . . . . . .
Still need more ideas . . . Help!

Final Notes:
After a considerable amount of time and effort I now have a properly working and communicating TunerPro RT(v.4.14, actually all versions tested OK).
The fix . . . . I run a diagnostic on the hard disk and found unrecoverable data errors. I replaced the laptops HDD. Did a fresh install of Windows XP sp2, Dell's laptop operating programs, and all drivers. Followed by a fresh install of ALL programs which also means taking the time to configure each program back to my preferences. The only thing copied over from backed up files was the data and documents. This has taken over two solid days and I still haven't downloaded and installed all of the various OS and program updates.
The results are . . . . all programs are working properly. I don't believe this laptop has ever worked better. Even when this laptop was new it had some issues(could I have had a failing HDD from the get-go?). In the long run, it will be worth the effort but right now I feel drained.
The cause of the issues I had . . . . not sure, but I imagine there was a corrupt resource that the later versions used thus only interrupting their opening.
Thanks to those that responded and stirred up the cobwebs in the greymatter.

Well I can't really blame this one on Windows OS (other than the fact that they hide HDD problems until they get catistrophic). Windows didn't cause my HDD to fail, though they could have made it easier to locate the problem. 90% of my programs ran great. Of course is that a good target to shot for? I think not.
Use one of the many linux distributions for a while, youll love microsoft believe me! (maybe you know what im talking about!)Mac OS x isnt any better... But really they all work good, they just like to break sometimes haha..
Oh speaking windows telling you if your hard disk is going bad, this is possible. On XP if you click start, right click on my computer, go to manage and then in the left window pane look for event viewer. Hit the plus next to event viewer, then click on system (im doing this from memory, i use Fedora 8, a linux OS)
then click the button labeled source in the right pane, it will sort all of the entries based on the source in ABC order... Scroll down to the D's and see if you have anything from DISK. Double click on any entrys for DISK, hopefully there are none! If it says device has a bad block, you had better be doing some data backups!
Oh btw sorry for the dummy instructions, i do that because someone at some point in time is going to come across this and have NO clue what im saying unless i said it very clearly...
People do that in the linux forums all the time and it gets on my nerves, so i make sure to include every detail..
wow long post, i really need to get some sleep!
